Callisto Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Chang-Hee Han (Calis), hereinafter "Callisto"), a developer of medical imaging data platforms for medical AI development and clinical research, and TAUNS Laboratories, Inc. (Headquarters: Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture; President and CEO: Masaki Nonaka, hereinafter "Tauns") have agreed to form a capital and business alliance aimed at building a medical data infrastructure and AI utilization platform. By combining Tauns’ medical institution and customer networks, commercialization infrastructure including regulatory and distribution systems, and computing resources with Callisto’s medical data technologies and resources, the two companies will accelerate their expansion into the pharmaceutical sector and overseas markets.
Background of the Alliance
To advance research and development in medical AI and drug discovery AI, as well as clinical studies, it is essential to appropriately collect, process, and integrate diverse medical data—including radiological and pathological images, clinical information such as electronic medical records, and specimen data including molecular information—into formats suitable for R&D. Additionally, there is a growing need to establish operational platforms that include computing resources, AI models, and AI analysis environments to securely and efficiently utilize this data.
Callisto has collaborated with medical institutions across Japan to build and provide medical imaging datasets, while also offering contract development and technical consulting services for drug discovery AI and medical AI. Tauns, as an in vitro diagnostic pharmaceutical manufacturer, has cultivated a robust network of medical institutions, along with extensive expertise in specimen outsourcing, customer engagement, and commercialization infrastructure covering regulatory affairs and distribution.
The two companies aim to combine their respective technological and business foundations to build a large-scale, multimodal medical data and AI utilization platform.
Objectives of the Alliance
Construction of a Multimodal Medical Data Infrastructure
The alliance will integrate medical images, clinical information including electronic medical records, specimen data, and biobank specimens into research-ready formats, while strictly complying with relevant laws and regulations and ensuring ethical standards and information security.
Development of an AI Utilization and Analysis Environment
The companies will establish an operational environment—including computing resources, AI models, and AI analysis platforms—to support advanced utilization of medical data and continuously generate value from it.
Acceleration of Pharmaceutical and International Expansion
By leveraging each other’s customer bases and commercialization know-how, and strengthening business development, marketing, and recruitment, the alliance will accelerate expansion into pharmaceutical applications and international markets.
Comment from Masaki Nonaka, President and CEO of TAUNS Laboratories, Inc.
“In our medium-term management plan, we have positioned the development of medical data and AI infrastructure as a key initiative.
We are delighted to partner with Callisto to co-create value through the utilization of medical data. Callisto possesses exceptional expertise and a strong track record in acquiring, processing, and analyzing medical data, making them a vital partner in advancing medical data utilization.
Moving forward, we will deepen our collaboration by leveraging our respective strengths to contribute to solving challenges in the medical field through effective data utilization.”
Comment from Chang-Hee Han (Calis), CEO of Callisto Inc.
“We are deeply grateful for the investment and recognition of our technological capabilities, medical data assets, and customer achievements in building a 'medical imaging data infrastructure' to support the era of medical AI and drug discovery AI.
By combining Tauns Group’s medical institution and customer networks, commercialization infrastructure including regulatory and distribution systems, and computing resources developed through specimen outsourcing with our own medical data technologies and resources, we will accelerate our expansion into the pharmaceutical sector and overseas markets.
Japan, one of the world’s most aged societies with universal health coverage, holds vast amounts of diverse, high-quality medical data—including radiological and pathological images, clinical information, and molecular specimen data. To date, we have collaborated with medical institutions across Japan to build medical imaging datasets, which we have provided to approximately 20 pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, medical AI firms, and academic institutions in Japan, the U.S., Europe, and South Korea.
Through this alliance, we will build a large-scale, multimodal medical data and AI analysis platform capable of cross-domain utilization of medical images, clinical information, molecular data, and biobank specimens, contributing globally to more accurate and earlier diagnosis and treatment, appropriate healthcare cost management, and the extension of healthy life expectancy.”
