Changing Outdated Perceptions of Childcare Behind "Parental Block" and "Career Guidance Block"
In recent years, there has been a nationwide decline in students enrolling in childcare training schools and a series of closures of such institutions. This is not only due to the decrease in the 18-year-old population but also to outdated perceptions and misunderstandings about the childcare industry, formed by past negative media coverage.
Even when high school students themselves are interested in childcare professions, they may hesitate in their career choices due to parental concerns or worries from career guidance counselors at their schools. Overcoming the so-called "parental block" and "career guidance block" is a crucial challenge in nurturing future childcare professionals within the region.
While vocational experience programs for high school students are conducted in municipalities across the country, a challenge remains in continuously connecting these experiences to subsequent career choices and future employment.
Therefore, in this program, the organizers, the Nagano City Kindergarten and Certified Children's Center Federation and the Nagano City Private Nursery Association, have taken the lead in designing vocational experiences that allow high school students to gain a concrete understanding of childcare work and workplace environments, rather than simply ending with playing with children. By dispelling misconceptions held by adults around them and adopting an approach focused on concrete career planning, the aim is to connect these experiences to future career choices.
