Newsweek Japan May 26, 2026 Issue (Released May 19)
[From the Editor]
The US-China summit, watched by the whole world, ended with a rather subtle feeling. There was no joint communique announcing agreed-upon points. It was a result that reflected the current state of relations, where both countries announced what they preferred to their respective media. However, it is not as if there were no keys to understanding future developments. That key is the phrase 'constructive strategic stability relationship' which the Chinese side published as having been agreed upon by both sides. This new definition, indicating the ideal form of bilateral relations, strongly suggests the current state of US-China relations and what might happen in the future. The May 19 issue's feature, 'The Rise and Fall of the US and China,' explains how to read this. (Nagaoka)
