Ayu (sweetfish) fishing season will open simultaneously in the Kamanashi and Shio rivers in Nirasaki City, Yamanashi Prefecture, on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Surrounded by Mt. Fuji and Mt. Yatsugatake, these rivers offer clean water and easy access, making them premier fishing spots. The local Kyo-hoku Fishery Cooperative has successfully stocked juvenile fish, kicking off the summer tomotsuri (decoy fishing) season. Kamanashi and Shio rivers feature cold, clear waters from the Southern Alps and Mt. Yatsugatake. The rich moss on the riverbeds produces active, territorial Ayu. Anglers can enjoy fishing against the backdrop of Mt. Fuji on clear days. Upper mountain streams also offer trout (char and landlocked salmon) fishing. A recreational fishing license (river fishing permit) is required. They can be purchased at local tackle shops, convenience stores, or online. For inquiries, contact Nirasaki City Tourism Association (0551-22-1991) or Kyo-hoku Fishery Cooperative (0551-27-2580). Visitors can also relax at Hakusan Onsen hot spring or buy souvenirs at Ginganoeki Nirasaki road station after fishing.
