About the Hida Takayama Ultra Marathon This event is highly regarded by runners nationwide as an ultra marathon that tests participants' ability to complete the undulating courses within Takayama City, which has the largest land area in Japan. With traditional streets, fresh greenery, and the warm support of local residents, it provides a memorable experience even amidst the tough race.
Event Highlights
1. Historic streets and breathtaking scenic courses After the start, runners pass by historic townscapes and morning markets—a unique pleasure of a tourist destination. Afterward, the course traverses challenging terrain with panoramic views of the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps) and beautiful rural scenery. It is truly a "running landscape" that allows runners to feel a sense of unity with nature during the vibrant green season.
2. Local "Omotenashi" (hospitality) The route features enthusiastic support from locals and well-stocked aid stations. Runners can refuel with regional specialties such as mugwort udon, Hibata soba, and deep-fried Hida tiger blowfish. At the 60km mark, runners can taste "Hida beef," Takayama's pride, to boost their morale for the finish.
3. Challenge and achievement The finisher rate is typically around 60–70%. Because it is one of Japan's toughest courses, the sense of accomplishment at the finish line is exceptional. All finishers will receive an original medal.
On the day of the event, we ask for the understanding and cooperation of residents around the venue and along the course regarding event announcements, shuttle bus operations, and traffic restrictions.
We ask for your enthusiastic support for the runners as they traverse the nature of Hida Takayama!
