Son of Former Tainan Deputy Mayor Receives Final Suspended Sentence for $100M Fraud

Yan Dajun, the youngest son of former Tainan Deputy Mayor Yan Chun-tso, was sentenced to two years in prison with a five-year probation by the Tainan Branch of the Taiwan High Court today, finalizing the case. Yan had previously been sentenced to seven years and ten months in the first instance for defrauding six victims of over NT$119.98 million under the guise of investments. The court noted that Yan has reached settlements with all complainants, completed some payments, and begun installment payments for others, demonstrating remorse and meeting the criteria for probation. Yan had used his father’s political influence and falsely claimed that President Lai Ching-te was his godfather to solicit investments in pawnshops and municipal projects. Instead of investing, he used the funds for interest payments and gambling. He was arrested in Anping District, Tainan, last June after failing to flee the country.
