Fortunately, a resident reported it in time, and the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency cooperated with the WildOne Wildlife Conservation Association and local tribal members to rescue and send it to the hospital. The Forestry Agency will award a bonus to the reporting tribal member.
The Taitung Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture issued a press release today stating that they received a report this morning that a Formosan black bear was trapped in the Meinong foothills near Banjiu, Beinan Township, Taitung County, at an altitude of only 428 meters.
The Taitung Branch immediately rushed to the scene with a total of 19 people, including the WildOne Wildlife Conservation Association, members of the Xiabinlang tribe, and police officers from the Chulu Police Station, to carry out the rescue. The bear was then sent to the WildOne Wildlife Hospital for examination and care.
The Taitung Branch stated that the location where the bear was trapped was steep terrain next to an industrial road. The rescue team overcame the terrain challenges and successfully handed the bear over to the WildOne medical team. Preliminary examination showed that the bear was a healthy adult female weighing 66 kg, with swelling on her right hind limb due to the trap. She will undergo further examination and necessary care at the WildOne Wildlife Hospital, and will be released into the wild after it is confirmed that she is healthy.
The Taitung Branch stated that the rescue operation was completed in a very short time thanks to the timely reporting by the public and the cooperation of the local tribe, medical team, and police. To thank the public for their enthusiastic reporting, a bonus will be awarded in the near future. If the public finds injured or trapped wildlife, please immediately call the Forestry Conservation Agency's 24-hour reporting hotline (0800-000-930) or the Taitung County Government's 1999 hotline.
