WHO Chief Arrives in DR Congo to Oversee Ebola Response, Says Outbreak is Containable

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo today to oversee the response to the Ebola virus, stating that the outbreak in the country is containable. According to AFP, the plane carrying Tedros arrived in Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC, tonight. He is expected to travel tomorrow to Ituri province in the northeast, the epicenter of the current outbreak. Tedros described the outbreak as "containable" and emphasized that the WHO does not support travel bans to combat the outbreak because they are "not very helpful." Earlier, he added, "We will overcome this outbreak together," and promised to do everything possible to assist. According to the latest WHO data, since the DRC declared the outbreak on the 15th of this month, more than 1,000 confirmed and suspected cases have been recorded as of the 24th, including 10 confirmed and 223 suspected deaths.
