US and Japan reaffirm importance of Taiwan Strait peace; State Dept opposes unilateral status quo changes

Central News Agency, Washington, May 27: Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi this week, and both sides reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The US State Department responded to CNA today, stating that Washington has an enduring interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and opposes any unilateral changes to the status quo, especially through force or coercion, hoping for a peaceful resolution of cross-strait differences. According to reports, the two met on the sidelines of the Quad meeting held in India. Rubio posted on X that under President Trump's leadership, they have entered a new golden age of US-Japan relations. The Quad joint statement expressed deep concern over the situation in the East and South China Seas and reiterated strong opposition to the militarization of disputed islands.
