US Unmanned Surface Vessel Successfully Crosses Taiwan Strait, Tracks Chinese Warships

According to PR Newswire, US marine technology firm Seasats announced today that its 'Lightfish' unmanned surface vessel (USV) successfully completed its first autonomous mission across the Taiwan Strait, tracking and filming Chinese warships. This milestone redefines the possibilities for autonomous maritime systems in one of the world's most sensitive waterways. The USV was deployed remotely from hundreds of miles away and completed the transit in five days while continuously monitoring maritime activity. During the voyage, 'Lightfish' encountered several Chinese warships, including a People's Liberation Army Navy Type 056 corvette. Notably, these vessels were not transmitting identification via the Automatic Identification System (AIS) while operating in Taiwan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). 'Lightfish' successfully tracked these vessels and captured imagery to confirm their type and origin. Seasats CEO Mike Flanigan stated, 'This is not the first time our vessels have encountered Chinese warships, but the location and timing of this encounter are particularly noteworthy.' Taiwan is closely studying these experiences and increasingly prioritizing unmanned systems as a core of its defense strategy. Seasats is actively working with Taiwan and allies in the Indo-Pacific to deploy and expand persistent maritime domain awareness.
