The Taichung City Fire Bureau has implemented energy-saving controls, which reportedly include sharing dormitories during shifts, turning off air conditioning in sub-stations at night, and removing water heaters, allegedly affecting the performance of firefighters. In response, the Fire Bureau stated that there are no mandatory restrictions on the usage time or quantity of air conditioning or electrical equipment in the sub-stations.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taichung City Councilor Chou Yung-hung issued a press release today, citing data from the Facebook page 'Fire God Tablet,' claiming that Taichung has the most severe energy-saving controls among the six special municipalities. Allegations include turning off air conditioning at night, supervisors checking timers, consolidating dormitories, removing electric water heaters, and even restricting the use of water dispensers.

Chou argued that this goes beyond 'suggested energy saving.' Since firefighters live and work at the station, the quality of rest during high summer temperatures directly affects their performance and judgment; he believes this is not an area where costs should be cut.

In a written response, the Fire Bureau stated that it promotes the principle of setting appropriate temperatures and using fans to balance environmental comfort with energy efficiency. It denied any mandatory restrictions on the usage time or quantity of air conditioning or related electrical equipment.

The Fire Bureau pointed out that air conditioning usage varies slightly by sub-station depending on internal management and environmental conditions. The temperature at the duty desk is set no lower than 26 degrees Celsius, supplemented by fans. Dormitories are air-conditioned during lunch breaks (12:00 PM to 2:00 PM) and at night (10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), and can be used at other times if needed for rest. Common rooms and dining areas are also managed flexibly.

Regarding bed arrangements, the Fire Bureau explained that it has adjusted configurations to accommodate two people per room to avoid energy waste from single-occupancy rooms. It emphasized that water dispensers and water heaters remain fully accessible.

Finally, the Fire Bureau stressed that it places great importance on the physical and mental health of its personnel and continues to urge supervisors at all levels to care for and communicate with their staff regarding their daily lives.
