CNA Nantou, May 30. The Nantou County Government held a riverbank cleanup event along the Zhuoshui River today. Participants collected enough trash and recyclables to fill one garbage truck and one recycling truck. The waste consisted mostly of lunch boxes, Styrofoam, and beverage bottles. Beyond cleaning the riverbank, the event helped strengthen community bonds. The event, co-organized by the Nantou County Government's Public Works Department and the Fourth River Management Office of the Water Resources Agency, attracted over 300 participants. Many were repeat supporters who had attended for three consecutive years, and some citizens brought their pet dogs to help pick up trash along the levee. The Mingjian Township cleaning team also dispatched garbage trucks to assist in transporting and sorting the collected waste. Li Kun-huang, Deputy Director of the Public Works Department, stated that the event took place along the levee road on the right bank under the Mingzhu Bridge in Mingjian Township. Participants were divided into groups to clean sections approximately 600 meters upstream and downstream. The first group, consisting of residents from Nanya and Zhuoshui villages, handled the upstream section, while residents from Xinmin Village and other attendees covered the downstream section. Li explained that the cleanup combines river management with flood prevention preparations. By allowing citizens to get close to the river and appreciate its beauty, and by physically cleaning the levees, the event strengthens flood defense functions. With the flood season approaching, he urged citizens to remain vigilant and keep drainage systems clear to protect the safety of the levees.
