Civil Groups in Taiwan Support Lee Cheuk-yan and Chow Hang-tung, Demand Unconditional Release

Taipei, May 31 (CNA) - Civil groups in Taiwan held a rally at Ximen Station in Taipei today to support former Hong Kong Alliance leaders Lee Cheuk-yan and Chow Hang-tung, who are charged with "inciting subversion of state power" under the Hong Kong National Security Law. The groups demanded their immediate and unconditional release, arguing that commemorating the June 4th incident and advocating for democracy should not be crimes. Sentencing is expected in mid-to-late July. Speakers at the rally, including representatives from the Taiwan Association for Human Rights and Amnesty International Taiwan, emphasized that the totalitarian government fears memory and that the fight for freedom must continue. The Hong Kong Alliance, which organized annual June 4th vigils, disbanded in September 2021.
