A new social media regulation came into effect in Malaysia on June 1, prohibiting teenagers under 16 from registering for accounts. Relevant platforms must implement age verification measures within a maximum of six months. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) emphasized that the new system is a crucial step toward creating a safer digital environment. This age verification requirement applies to licensed social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Under the 'Online Safety Act 2025,' the 'Child Protection Code' and 'Risk Mitigation Code' took effect today. The MCMC requires platforms to implement 'design for child safety' principles, including age verification using government-issued identification. Existing users found to be under 16 will have a one-month grace period to download or transfer their data before platforms take restrictive or suspension measures. Platforms that violate these regulations will face regulatory and enforcement actions.
