French fans riot after Champions League win; arrests near 900

Central News Agency, Paris, June 1. After the French football team Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League for the second consecutive year on the 30th, celebrations turned into riots. The French government announced today that the number of arrests has risen to nearly 900. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told France Inter radio, "We have arrested more than 890 people, which is 45% more than last year," adding that nearly 180 law enforcement officers were injured. President Emmanuel Macron met with the team at the Elysee Palace yesterday evening, calling them a "huge pride" for France while condemning the "indescribable" violence. In Paris and other cities, clashes between youths and police marred the celebrations, with cars set on fire and shops looted. Additionally, one man died while riding a motorcycle to celebrate, and authorities reported several stabbing incidents.
