An explosion occurred in the Namhkan area of Shan State in northern Myanmar, near the border with China. Two rescue workers stated that the incident resulted in dozens of deaths. The insurgent group controlling the area pointed out that the explosion was caused by the accidental detonation of mining explosives. According to AFP, one frontline rescue worker reported that 46 people were killed, including children, and more than 70 others were injured. Another rescue worker stated that the total death toll reached 59. Both rescue workers requested anonymity due to security concerns. According to the BBC and local media outlet Shwe Phee Myay, at least 55 people were killed, including 25 women and 30 men, with dozens more injured. Since the military coup in 2021, Myanmar has been mired in civil war, with the military clashing with various pro-democracy guerrillas and powerful ethnic armed organizations. The Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), one of the most powerful ethnic armed organizations in the country, is currently in a ceasefire with the Myanmar military and controls this village near the Chinese border. The organization stated that this "accidental explosion" occurred around noon yesterday. They said that explosives stored locally for mining and quarrying detonated for unknown reasons, but they did not release exact casualty figures. In a statement, the TNLA noted that these explosives belonged to the organization's economic department and that the specific cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
