Tiananmen Mothers Issue Statement Ahead of 37th Anniversary of June 4th Incident

This year marks the 37th anniversary of the June 4th Tiananmen Square incident. Ahead of this, the 'Tiananmen Mothers,' a group composed of families of the victims, issued an anniversary statement calling on the Chinese authorities to disclose the truth about June 4th, compensate the families, and hold those responsible legally accountable to restore justice to the victims' families. The statement, signed by 107 family members, condemns the bloody crackdown on peaceful student and citizen protesters by the military under the orders of a few leaders at the time. It notes that 37 years later, there is still no sign of a resolution, as the government continues to suppress speech and prevent young people from learning the truth. Finally, it urges President Xi Jinping to uphold the spirit of Hu Yaobang and take responsibility for resolving this historical issue.
