(Central News Agency, Li Hui-ting, Pingtung County, 2nd) Taiwan's fruit industry has overcome high-standard international quarantine barriers to enter the European market. Today, the first batch of mangoes, lychees, and dragon fruit, totaling approximately 6 tons, was sealed and shipped. Minister of Agriculture Chen Chun-chi stated that this represents the establishment of a fruit market bridge between Taiwan and Europe.
The Ministry of Agriculture held a press conference in Pingtung today, attended by Minister Chen and Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi, to witness the first shipment. Minister Chen noted that while fresh fruit exports to Europe were previously limited, this systematic approach signifies a deeper trade relationship. He emphasized the importance of the newly built international cold chain logistics center in Pingtung to facilitate future exports.
Magistrate Chou praised the efforts of the Ministry in overcoming geographical and quarantine hurdles. She expressed pride in Pingtung leading this initiative and committed to making Taiwanese fruit a top choice for European consumers.
The Ministry explained that after years of preparation, the EU approved guava and mango imports last June, followed by lychees and dragon fruit this February. Given the strict European standards, this success highlights Taiwan's advanced cold chain and quarantine capabilities, moving local agriculture toward international high-end standards.
