(Central News Agency reporter Su Muchun, Taichung, 4th) Taichung police recently discovered a car that remained stationary at a green light while patrolling in Wuri District. Upon stopping the vehicle, they found the Vietnamese male driver, surnamed Li, to be not only driving under the influence of alcohol but also suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. Furthermore, he was found to be an overstaying migrant worker. The case was transferred to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office for further questioning, and the court approved a detention request.
The Taichung City Police Department's Wuri Precinct stated today that officers from the Wuguang Police Station were patrolling the intersection of Section 1, Huanhe Road, and Section 7, Huanzhong Road in Wuri District at around 1:00 PM on May 29 this year. They noticed a car that remained stationary even after the traffic light turned green and approached it for inspection.
During the inspection, officers not only detected a strong smell of alcohol from the driver but also noticed he appeared dazed, showing signs of possible drug use.
Mr. Li underwent a breathalyzer test, which showed his alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. A subsequent preliminary saliva test also returned a positive result for drugs. Further investigation revealed he was an overstaying migrant worker. After police questioning, the case was forwarded to the prosecutors' office on charges of violating the Criminal Code's public danger offense. Following a review, the prosecutor requested and obtained a detention order from the court.
Police urged that drug-impaired driving not only severely endangers the driver's own safety but also poses a major threat to the lives, bodies, and property of other road users. They stated they will continue to strengthen various inspection and prevention measures at irregular times and locations to strictly prevent the dangers of drug-impaired driving.
