(CNA reporter Hsieh Yi-hsuan, Taipei, 10th) A section of sidewalk on Taipei's Zhengzhou Road collapsed this morning, causing the transformer box on it to topple as well. Taipower stated that the tilting transformer box did not cause any power outages for users. Due to severe soil erosion beneath the road, a sinkhole formed, leading to insufficient support for the transformer's foundation and causing the collapse. The company has mobilized personnel for emergency repairs.
Police and fire departments received a report at 10:41 AM that a transformer box had collapsed on Zhengzhou Road, opposite the Taipei City Hospital Zhongxing Branch. Upon arrival, they found that the transformer box had been displaced due to a sidewalk collapse and immediately notified Taipower and other relevant units to handle the situation.
Taipower explained that after receiving the report, they immediately dispatched personnel to the scene for inspection and repair, confirming that the tilted and displaced transformer box did not cause any power outages.
Taipower stated that severe soil erosion under the road had created a sinkhole about 5 meters long and 4 meters wide, leading to insufficient support for the transformer's foundation, which resulted in the collapse. Taipower has mobilized manpower and vehicles for the repair work, and the cause of the road collapse is pending clarification by relevant city government units.
The Taipei City Public Works Department previously stated that the land belongs to the Taiwan Railways Administration. After Taipower relocates the transformer box, they will assist in notifying relevant units to excavate and clarify the cause. (Editor: Zhai Si-jia) 1150610
