(CNA, Reporter Yeh Chen, Taoyuan, 10th) The Ministry of the Interior's National Immigration Agency held the 16th International Conference on Border Management today, focusing on the theme of smart border management. The event showcased the government's achievements in promoting smart management, optimizing clearance services, and deepening international cooperation. Political Deputy Minister of the Interior Ma Shih-Yuan, who attended the event, affirmed these accomplishments.

During the opening ceremony, Ma stated that Taiwan's passenger entry and exit volume last year had recovered to 94.6% of the pre-pandemic peak in 2019. He noted that frontline border personnel must not only handle the vast demand for passenger clearance but also shoulder the important tasks of maintaining national security and preventing cross-border illicit activities.

Ma expressed that the Immigration Agency's continuous promotion of smart customs clearance and digital service reforms in recent years, including the active introduction of technological identification and intelligent inspection equipment, has optimized passenger clearance processes and service quality, with the results being widely recognized. He added that creating a resilient and effective smart border management environment that balances security, efficiency, and public convenience is a crucial direction for all countries to work towards together.

The Immigration Agency stated that this conference brought together representatives from border management and law enforcement agencies from countries such as the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Japan, and Canada, along with nearly 180 experts from domestic and international government agencies, airlines, the tech industry, and academia. They engaged in in-depth exchanges on topics such as smart customs clearance, technological identification, smart terminals, and future trends in border management.

The morning session focused on the development trends of smart airports and border management, with Taoyuan International Airport Corporation sharing the planning and construction results of Terminal 3's smart terminal. Additionally, border management officials from the United States, the Netherlands, and Japan gave presentations on themes including smart management, the application of technology in inspections, and the optimization of passenger services.

The afternoon will feature a presentation led by an Australian official, followed by a discussion among domestic and international technology firms on the technological applications for smart border management. Through the exchange of practical experiences from various countries, the event provides an important reference for promoting a smart border. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150610
