(Central News Agency, Taipei, 10th) According to media reports, Kuomintang Chairperson Cheng Li-wen said during a visit to the United States that it would be difficult for Taiwan to pass a peaceful unification referendum. Executive Yuan Secretary-General Chang Tun-han stated today that the cross-strait policy from former President Tsai Ing-wen to current President Lai Ching-te is very clear: 'neither humbling nor arrogant, maintain the status quo.' He said this is also the expectation and consensus of the majority of the people, and they will continue to uphold it.
Media reports indicated that Cheng Li-wen, speaking at a symposium during her US visit, stated that the cross-strait differences span over a century. If a referendum were held now, it would be difficult for Taiwan to pass peaceful unification, but the majority of Taiwanese people support cross-strait dialogue and exchange.
Before attending a session of the Legislative Yuan's Internal Administration Committee today, Chang Tun-han was asked by the media about this issue. He said that under the DPP administration, the cross-strait policy from former President Tsai Ing-wen to current President Lai Ching-te is very clear: 'neither humbling nor arrogant, maintain the status quo.' This is not only a key focus of the DPP's governance but also the expectation and consensus of the majority of the people, and they will continue to adhere to it.
Chang Tun-han noted that Cheng Li-wen visited the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. He said he would like to quote a famous saying from former US President John F. Kennedy to suggest to Cheng Li-wen: 'In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger.' He believes this is the expectation of every Taiwanese person and a shared responsibility for both the ruling and opposition parties. (Editor: Hsieh Chia-chen) 1150610
