French President Emmanuel Macron said today that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will attend next week's Group of Seven (G7) summit in France to "rebuild consensus on supporting Ukraine." Additionally, leaders from four Arab countries will be invited for talks on the Middle East conflict.
According to AFP, the invited leaders will participate in the G7 meeting from June 15 to 17 in the Alpine lakeside resort of Evian, France. G7 members include the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States.
Macron stated that Zelenskyy's participation "is very important for us because we need to rebuild consensus within the G7 on supporting Ukraine across all aspects of the Russia-Ukraine war, including the need for 'negotiations,'" alluding to differing views between European leaders and US President Trump.
To discuss the US and Israeli military operation against Iran at the end of February, leaders from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates will also be invited to a special session on the 17th.
Macron noted that talks will focus on the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which, due to soaring fuel prices, has had a "substantial impact on the economies of various countries." Discussions will also cover "negotiations related to Iran."
He made these remarks during a meeting with civil society representatives at the Elysee Palace.
Macron added that after the G7 leaders' dinner on the 15th and two sessions on the Ukraine and Middle East crises, the agenda will shift to "North-South partnerships."
"In addition to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the African Development Bank, we will also invite partners who are advancing this agenda with us, particularly South Korea, India, Kenya, and Brazil."
The summit on the 17th will conclude with sessions on "global imbalances" and "growth issues." Prior to this, on the 11th, a "World Convergence Summit for Growth" video conference will be held, with China and several emerging countries participating.
Additionally, technology companies from the United States and other countries will be invited to participate in discussions during the summit, covering topics such as "protection and regulation" policies, as well as sovereignty and cybersecurity.
