(Central News Agency Vancouver 11th Combined Foreign News) The World Cup soccer tournament is attracting fans from around the world to Vancouver, Canada. Even though tickets are expensive, some fans have decided to create their own journeys, whether to commemorate a loved one or to share an experience with family; the precious memories already transcend the event itself.
According to Reuters, the first match of this World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, saw Mexico defeat South Africa 2-0. Vancouver will host its first match on the 13th, a group stage game between Turkey and Australia.
For some fans, this trip holds deep significance. One German fan said he chose to visit Vancouver to honor his late father who loved the city.
Harold, from Germany, said, "We came specifically to see the Australia vs. Turkey game. We're very happy we managed to get a few tickets. I paid $150, which is a high price for a soccer match, but it's pretty good to get tickets at this price."
Australian fan Mark Wright is attending his fifth World Cup with his family. He believes the cost is not important compared to creating precious memories.
Wright said, "I've been to four World Cups already, and how much I spend has never been the point. I want to follow my country and my team, and spend time with my family."
"The World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime memory for me... I think the World Cup really makes every place better. You see the best side of a country or city because everyone is happy. The weather is usually good too, as if there's some kind of magic." (Translation: Shih Shih) 1150612
