Protests Erupt Again in Albania Against Trump Family's Resort Development

For over a week, daily protests have been held in the capital, Tirana, accusing the development project led by Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner of damaging the environment. Protesters point out that the approximately $4.6 billion development project, located in a protected area on the Adriatic coast, poses a significant threat to the local environment and the lagoon, which is crucial for migratory birds. The developers plan to turn the uninhabited Sazan Island, a former communist-era military base, into a tourist destination. Like previous gatherings, tonight's rally saw protesters marching along Tirana's main boulevard towards the government headquarters. The protesters carried signs reading 'Albania is not for sale' and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Student Teftalia Papa told AFP on the crowded street, 'We don't want this kind of investment. It will destroy our environment and permanently change this place.' The potential environmental impact of the project has drawn warnings from the EU, which stated it could slow down Albania's EU accession process, a key political goal for Rama. Rama has repeatedly downplayed the protesters' concerns, insisting that the project has not yet been approved and that there is no reason for the public to worry.
