Anti-Fur Referendum Proposal: CEC to Hold Hearing to Clarify Points of Contention

(CNA reporter Lai Yu-Zhen, Taipei, June 12) Regarding the 'anti-fur' referendum proposal submitted by citizens in April, the CEC held a commission meeting today and decided to hold a hearing to clarify whether it meets the requirements of the Referendum Act and other related points of contention.

The CEC pointed out in a news release today that citizen Zhang Wei-Chen submitted a nationwide referendum proposal on April 15 this year, asking, 'Do you agree that the import, production, and sale of raw materials and products (such as rabbit fur, mink fur, and fox fur) primarily intended for fur should be prohibited, except for fur obtained as by-products of commonly consumed meat in Taiwan and items exempted by the competent authority?' The number of proposers was 2,598, which has reached the threshold for proposal set by the Referendum Act (more than 1,955 people).

The CEC stated that the number of characters in the main text and reasons for the referendum proposal, as well as the filling and binding methods of the list of proposers, all comply with the provisions of Article 9, Paragraph 1, Paragraph 2, and Paragraph 5 of the Referendum Act. After deliberation at today's commission meeting, it was decided to hold a hearing to clarify whether the proposal complies with the relevant provisions of the Referendum Act and other points of contention.

According to the Referendum Act, if a referendum proposal requires correction after review, the CEC shall state the reasons and notify the leader of the proposers to make corrections within 30 days, with only one opportunity. If corrections are not made within the deadline or if the corrections still do not comply with the regulations, the proposal will be rejected. Additionally, if the CEC orders corrections under Article 10, Paragraph 3 of the Referendum Act, a hearing must be held first to clarify the relevant points of contention and assist the leader of the proposers in making necessary corrections.
