(CNA reporter Li Hui-ting, Pingtung County, June 12) TSMC led its supply chain into the Pingtung Science Park today, holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the semiconductor supply chain special zone. Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi stated that industrial upgrading will enhance urban competitiveness and enable local youth to return and work in their hometown.
The semiconductor supply chain special zone within the Pingtung Science Park, planned and coordinated by TSMC, spans approximately 28 hectares. Today’s joint groundbreaking ceremony was led by TSMC with seven partner companies. President Lai Qing-te, TSMC Chairman and CEO Dr. C.C. Wei, Magistrate Chou, National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Minister Wu Cheng-wen, and other officials attended. Despite heavy rain and loud thunder, President Lai joked, 'Heaven sends rain and thunder as blessings.'
In her speech, Magistrate Chou noted that just one year after the joint announcement in May last year by the NSTC, Pingtung County Government, and TSMC to launch the supply chain zone, the groundbreaking ceremony has become a reality—turning promises into action. She expressed hope that industrial upgrading will strengthen urban competitiveness and encourage young people to stay or return to their hometowns for employment.
Minister Wu Cheng-wen emphasized that semiconductor demand continues to rise. The government aims to connect southern counties into a semiconductor 'S-curve corridor,' with emerging supply chains in space technology, smart robotics, and defense industries. In the future, the Greater Southern New Silicon Valley will build a complete industrial ecosystem and enable broad applications.
Cheng Shih-chih, Chairman of Hwa Maw Scientific Technology—one of the进驻 companies—told the media that they are constructing the world’s most advanced environmental control rooms to meet TSMC’s standards. As TSMC’s most advanced processes are already concentrated in southern Taiwan, establishing a facility in Pingtung allows for proximity and efficient service.
The Pingtung County Government stated that TSMC’s presence will include a multi-functional service center, verification laboratories, and training centers. The seven进驻 companies are Hwa Maw Scientific Technology, She De Enterprise, An-Pao International, Ho Sung Technology, Mega Union Enterprise, Taiwan Sil-Micro Hongsheng Technology, and Fan Hsuan System Technology.
The NSTC Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration stated it will continue promoting investment attraction in Pingtung Park to accelerate company establishment. The Pingtung Science Park is expected to generate approximately 5,400 jobs and NT$36 billion in annual output. (Editor: Chen Jen-hua) 1150612
