(CNA Website) Continuous rainfall brought by a weather front and the southwest monsoon has caused water levels in reservoirs across Taiwan to steadily rise. According to statistics from the Water Resources Agency, a recent rainfall event from 7 AM on the 4th to 7 AM on the 12th added approximately 450 million tons of water to Taiwan’s major reservoirs, with about 300 million tons already stored. As of 3 PM today, Zengwen Reservoir’s storage rate has reached 21.7%.
To better understand the relationship between effective reservoir capacity and actual water storage, a netizen used the chatbot ChatGPT to generate a graphic, clearly illustrating how Zengwen Reservoir’s capacity far exceeds that of other reservoirs. Some citizens also expressed curiosity as to why, despite significant recent rainfall, Zengwen Reservoir’s water level has not risen dramatically. The meteorological fan page Taiwan Typhoon Forum joined the discussion, commenting: 'Zengwen is Taiwan’s largest reservoir—why does everyone expect it to hit full capacity after just one rainstorm?'
According to data from the Water Resources Agency’s official website, as of 3 PM today, Zengwen Reservoir’s storage rate stands at 21.7%, significantly lower than Sun Moon Lake Reservoir’s 81.4%. However, Zengwen’s effective water storage volume is 97.71 million cubic meters, compared to Sun Moon Lake’s 104.612 million cubic meters—only about 6.902 million cubic meters difference.
Zengwen Reservoir is located upstream on the main stream of the Zengwen River in Dapu Township, Chiayi County, and is Taiwan’s largest reservoir. It supplies agricultural, industrial, and domestic water to the Chiayi-Nanbu region, and also serves flood control, power generation, and tourism functions. Its current effective storage capacity is 450.04 million cubic meters, approximately 3.5 times that of Sun Moon Lake Reservoir (effective capacity: 128.461 million cubic meters).
