(Central News Agency, Washington, 12th, Comprehensive Foreign News) The New York Times reported today, citing two senior European officials, that the United States plans to significantly reduce the aircraft and warships it provides for NATO operations in Europe, a decision that would limit NATO's ability to conduct long-range strikes and reconnaissance.
According to the report, the plan includes reducing the number of F-16 and F-15E fighter jets from about 150 to 100, cutting maritime patrol aircraft from 26 to 15, and withdrawing all eight aerial refueling tankers previously provided to Europe.
The New York Times noted that the plan also aims to redeploy a missile-capable submarine, an aircraft carrier, several warships, and dozens of fighter jets assigned to carrier missions. The report also indicated that one of the two bomber groups originally allocated for European defense might also be reassigned.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report. NATO and the Pentagon have not yet responded to requests for comment.
Reuters reported in May that the US planned to reduce military capabilities provided to allies in the event of a major crisis.
The Trump administration has repeatedly accused European governments of underinvesting in their militaries and over-relying on US protection, while urging European and Asian allies to increase defense spending to 3.5% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP). (Translation: Zhang Xiaowen) 1150612
