US-Iran War Key News

GENEVA, June 18 (CNA) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said today it is ready to begin developing the "specific steps" needed to implement an agreement between the United States and Iran.

Agence France-Presse reported that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told reporters in Geneva: "It is now up to us to sit down with the United States and Iran and start developing the specific steps that must be taken."

U.S. President Trump and Iranian President yesterday signed an agreement to end the Middle East war, in which Tehran agreed to dilute its enriched uranium in exchange for massive economic relief.

According to the terms of the agreement released by U.S. officials, Iran will dilute its stockpile of enriched uranium, possibly under the supervision of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, with "dilution on site."

Grossi insisted that the IAEA is the appropriate body to oversee this process, stating: "This is a very complex operation, this is no secret, so we have to do it very, very meticulously."

He said: "The indispensable role of the IAEA is recognized in this signed memorandum of understanding... I think that speaks volumes about our credibility and the indispensable role we play."

Grossi said: "I think the existence of this memorandum is a good thing. Now the technical work begins." (Compiled by Liu Shu-chin) 1150618
