(Central News Agency reporter Liao Wen-qi, Shanghai, June 18) According to Japanese media reports, data released by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) on the 17th shows that the number of Chinese visitors to Japan in May decreased by 60.4% year-on-year, dropping to 313,000. This marks the sixth consecutive month that figures have fallen below the same period of the previous year, with the impact of the Chinese government's call to avoid travel to Japan still ongoing.

According to reports from Kyodo News and Nikkei Asia, JNTO data indicates that the total number of foreign visitors to Japan in May declined by 3.6% year-on-year to 3,559,900, marking the second consecutive month of year-on-year decline.

Although the number of Chinese tourists dropped sharply by 60.4%, visitors from South Korea, Taiwan, the Middle East, and Europe and the United States all increased.

According to the data, South Korea recorded the highest number of visitors to Japan in May, reaching 951,300, a 15.2% increase. Taiwan followed closely with 616,800 visitors, up 14.6%, both setting historical highs for the same period. The United States ranked third with 333,700 visitors, an increase of 7.0%. China ranked fourth.

Middle Eastern tourists, who declined in April due to deteriorating conditions in Iran, rebounded in May with a 67.8% increase, reaching 39,000 visitors. Although some countries saw declines due to reduced flight availability, the region's overall growth was driven by the Islamic holiday period in May. (Editor: Lu Jia-rong) 1150618
