(New York, June 21, CNA Foreign News) Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, a key proponent of the artificial intelligence (AI) wave, recently discussed his vision for the next phase of AI development in an interview, aiming for models to become cheaper, give users more control, and enter a new stage of winning public trust through political discourse.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Nadella is joining a growing movement to counter AI giants like OpenAI and Anthropic.
He criticized a small group of companies for simultaneously highlighting the safety risks and potential job losses from AI, insisting they need vast resources for unlimited expansion, while monopolizing the value of this world-changing technology.
Nadella told The Wall Street Journal, "You can't simultaneously scare people by saying, 'Hey, white-collar jobs are going to be eliminated,' and that AI will become a weapon, and then use that as an excuse to ask society to give you all the resources to build data centers."
He predicted that society will not tolerate AI training and knowledge crystallization being controlled by a few models and companies.
While Nadella did not directly name OpenAI, Anthropic, or Alphabet's Google – the three companies building the most advanced closed models – he made it clear that Microsoft is working to prevent these top model developers from dominating the AI race and controlling its future direction.
To reduce costs for its customers, Microsoft has launched its AI Agent, Copilot Cowork, allowing users to choose various AI models, including cheaper ones, when performing long-duration tasks. It is also considering integrating China's low-cost AI, DeepSeek, into the Microsoft platform.
OpenAI and Anthropic have accused DeepSeek of copying their top models through "distillation."
In this AI race, Nadella has played the role of an "industry elder." His current pivot away from blindly pursuing top-tier models is undoubtedly a significant shift drawing public attention.
Nadella stated that there is room for every company to thrive and predicted the emergence of very successful new startups. A Microsoft spokesperson added that Microsoft will continue to foster its successful partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic, and that the AI industry reshaping Nadella is promoting is not a "zero-sum game."
Microsoft has lagged behind competitors in developing its own AI systems. Lacking competitive top-tier models, Microsoft has decided to leverage its substantial financial resources and join the ranks of companies dedicated to turning AI models into "commodities."
He mentioned that future AI deployment models will be more democratized, with societal benefits widely shared, and companies will avoid over-reliance on a few top models.
Nadella's vision for AI is a "knowledge engine" that helps businesses leverage their employees, utilize their own data, and flexibly employ combinations of multiple models at different price points and capabilities.
He pointed out that the core characteristic of future enterprises will depend on "the implicit knowledge they contain," which encompasses both human and AI crystallization. Therefore, ensuring the security of intellectual property will be paramount to prevent the company's own value from being mediocrally commoditized. (Compiled by: Chang Ming-hsuan) 2024/06/22)
