(CNA reporter Hao Hsueh-ching, Taichung, June 22) Last night, while on duty to crack down on drunk driving, the Fourth Precinct of the Taichung City Police Department spotted a vehicle with a canceled license plate speeding. The driver, upon being stopped by police, rammed a police car in an attempt to escape but was subdued by superior police forces who surrounded and apprehended him. A rapid drug test came back positive, and he was taken into custody.

The Fourth Precinct explained today that while on duty last night to crack down on drunk driving, officers observed a man surnamed Chen driving a small passenger car with a canceled license plate at high speed. Considering the surrounding traffic conditions, officers followed and gathered evidence, waiting for an opportunity to intercept.

When the police pursued the vehicle to Sanguang 1st Street in Beitun District, Chen, realizing the police were approaching for an inspection, attempted to ram a police car and escape. Under the pincer movement of police cars from front and rear and the deployment of superior police forces for encirclement and capture, he was immediately subdued. Seized as evidence were 4 etonitazene vape cartridges, 1 bottle of etonitazene oil, 2 electronic vaporizers, a batch of empty vape cartridges, and 3 mobile phones.

Police stated that a rapid drug test of Chen's saliva showed positive reactions for amphetamines and etonitazene, both Schedule II drugs. A female companion, surnamed Yu, was also found to possess and use etonitazene. The case has been transferred to the Taiwan Taichung District Prosecutors Office for investigation on charges including violations of the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act and endangering public safety. Prosecutors have been requested to seek detention from the court.

In addition to legal proceedings, police pointed out that Chen was cited for drunk driving and using another vehicle's license plate, and the license plate was confiscated and the vehicle impounded. Investigations will continue to trace the source of the drugs and related trafficking networks. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150622
