Key News on the Iran War
WASHINGTON (CNA/Reuters) - According to the latest poll by CBS News, 78% of Americans want the Iran war to end as soon as possible, particularly those most affected by rising oil prices.
According to the poll results, although American society generally leans towards supporting an end to the war, most respondents believe that the United States has not succeeded in its strategic or economic interests, and the cost of this conflict is not worth it.
Specifically, 69% of respondents believe that Iran's nuclear program has not been permanently halted, and 68% believe Iran will continue to pose a threat to its neighbors. Even among the grassroots of President Trump's Republican Party, many hold this view.
Furthermore, over 70% of the public believes that the US has not achieved the goal of "making the Iranian people safer or freer" after the conflict ended, nor has it facilitated the replacement of the current leadership with a pro-US regime.
In terms of political perception, only 22% of Americans believe the US "has the upper hand" in the interim agreement with Iran, 37% believe the interim agreement is more favorable to Iran, and 41% believe the agreement is reasonably fair.
The poll also shows a clear division within the Republican Party, with about 40% of Republican supporters believing the war should continue until Iran makes further concessions. This group also overwhelmingly believes that allowing the current Iranian regime to remain in power is unacceptable.
Most Americans believe that the Trump administration did not fully foresee the impact of the war on the global economy. This also affects public evaluation of the government: most do not believe the government genuinely believes US objectives have been achieved, but rather feel the authorities just want to end the conflict as soon as possible.
Despite this, expectations of potential oil price declines seem to help stabilize Trump's overall approval rating and the public's evaluation of his handling of the Iran situation.
In recent months, as oil prices have risen, the president's approval rating has declined. Now that the conflict has ended, his approval rating has slightly rebounded by 1 percentage point. Although it has not yet returned to pre-war levels, the rise in support among non-college-educated white voters is the main driving factor, especially among those who expect oil prices to fall soon.
However, about 40% of respondents still believe that Iran may continue to threaten and blockade the Strait of Hormuz in the future.
Overall, given the perception that US objectives have not been achieved and the future is uncertain, most Americans believe that this conflict has created more problems than it has solved.
This CBS News/YouGov poll was conducted from June 17 to 19, surveying 2519 American adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points. (Compiled by: Shi Shi) 1150622
