(CNA) The Ministry of Finance's latest statistics show that the home economy and digital leisure trends have driven the development of Taiwan's game software industry, with total revenue reaching NT$71 billion in 2025, an increase of 48.7% from 2020. Among these, the game software publishing sector saw the most significant growth, more than doubling its revenue.
The Ministry of Finance's Statistics Department last week released Statistical Report No. 10, summarizing the overview of the number of companies and revenue in Taiwan's game software industry from 2020 to 2025.
The Statistics Department pointed out that in recent years, the rise of the home economy and digital leisure trends has led to rapid growth in online gaming and mobile game-related fields, with the game software industry flourishing accordingly. From 2020 to 2025, the total number of companies in the game software industry remained stable between 1,114 and 1,149, including three categories: game software publishing, game software programming, and game software sales.
According to statistics, the number of companies in the game software publishing and game software programming sectors fluctuated more significantly. The game software programming sector, which accounts for about 60% of the total, has been declining year by year due to market competition and talent acquisition pressures, with 642 companies in 2025, a decrease of 12% from 2020. The game software publishing sector has seen a continuous increase in the number of companies due to digital platforms lowering industry entry barriers, exceeding 200 companies in 2025, an increase of 77% from 2020. The game software sales sector showed a relatively stable trend.
In terms of revenue, the game software industry expanded from less than NT$50 billion in 2020 to NT$71 billion in 2025, an increase of 48.7%. The game software publishing sector saw the most significant increase, growing by more than double in 2025 compared to 2020. Due to increased industry R&D thresholds and rising costs, the game software programming sector is trending towards scale competition, with revenue only increasing by 9% over the five years.
Observing the situation across different cities and counties, the Statistics Department indicated that the game software industry exhibits significant regional concentration due to factors such as talent, market, capital, and industry cluster effects. In terms of the number of companies, the top three cities for game software publishing and game software sales in 2025 were Taipei City, Taichung City, and New Taipei City.
In terms of revenue, the game software publishing sector accounted for the highest proportion, nearly 60%, due to the presence of large companies in New Taipei City, followed by Taipei City with 39%. The game software sales sector's revenue share reached 64% due to the concentration of headquarters, distribution channels, and import agents in Taipei City.
Furthermore, Taipei City and New Taipei City ranked first and second in both the number of companies and revenue for the game software programming sector, with their combined revenue accounting for 70% of the national total. Hsinchu City ranked third with a 10% revenue share due to the larger average scale of its companies. (Editor: Lin Chia-hsien) 20240622
