Taipei, June 23 (CNA) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced its latest list of border inspection violations, which included several unqualified products imported from China, such as yellow croaker and cake boxes, which are food containers. Approximately 6,270 kilograms of yellow croaker and 2,155 kilograms of food containers were intercepted at the border and returned or destroyed.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare's Food and Drug Administration today announced its latest list of unqualified border inspection products. A total of 11 products were found to be non-compliant, including Indonesian banana dried biscuits, Japanese mandarins, Thai galangal slices, and Vietnamese frozen shrimp. These products were returned or destroyed due to non-compliance with regulations regarding preservative content and pesticide residues.
Liu Fang-ming, director of the FDA's Northern Center for Regional Administration, informed the media today that one batch of Chinese chilled yellow croaker, reported by the importer "Hui Feng Ju He Co., Ltd.," was found to contain 0.01 ppm of the veterinary drug enrofloxacin. According to the standards for veterinary drug residues, enrofloxacin is not permitted to be detected and must be returned or destroyed.
Liu Fang-ming stated that the FDA has adjusted the inspection of "Hui Feng Ju He Co., Ltd." at the border to a batch-by-batch inspection, with a sampling rate of 100%. According to statistics, from December 15, 114 to June 15, 115, 242 batches of Chinese fresh or chilled yellow croaker were reported for inspection, with 2 batches found to be non-compliant, resulting in a non-compliance rate of 0.8%.
In addition, two batches of food containers imported from China were found to be non-compliant during border inspection. Liu Fang-ming said that these violations involved Chinese cake boxes and gilded boxes reported by importers "Wan Qing Co., Ltd." and "Shen Da Chu Baking Materials Store," respectively, which were found to contain fluorescent whitening agents.
According to the "Hygiene Standards for Food Utensils, Containers, and Packaging," fluorescent whitening agents are not permitted to be detected. These two batches of Chinese food containers must be returned or destroyed. Liu Fang-ming stated that the FDA has adjusted the inspection of "Wan Qing Co., Ltd." and "Shen Da Chu Baking Materials Store" at the border to a batch-by-batch inspection, with a sampling rate of 100%.
According to FDA statistics, from December 15, 114 to June 15, 115, 1194 batches of Chinese "other paper or paperboard plates, dishes, cups, and similar articles, with a waxed or pulp surface for food contact" were reported for inspection. Seven batches were found to be non-compliant, with a non-compliance rate of 0.6%. The reasons for non-compliance included excessive levels of fluorescent whitening agents, evaporated residue, and chloroform-soluble substances.
Liu Fang-ming said that the FDA has been implementing enhanced random inspections at the border for Chinese "other paper or paperboard plates, dishes, cups, and similar articles, with a waxed or pulp surface for food contact" from April 7, 115 to July 22, 115, with a sampling rate of 20% to 50%.
