(Central News Agency, San Francisco, June 22) The California State Senate recently passed a pro-Taiwan resolution, affirming the 30th anniversary of Taiwan's presidential direct elections and the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, marking dual democratic milestones. This is the third consecutive year the California Senate has passed a pro-Taiwan resolution, following those in 2024 and 2025.
The resolution was jointly introduced by Steven Choi, Vice Chair of the California Senate Committee on Local Government, and Jerry McNerney, Chair of the Senate Committee on Revenue and Taxation.
The resolution commemorates the 42nd anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Taiwan and California and the 26th anniversary of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. It praises the friendly relations between the two sides in the fields of economy and trade, technology, education, tourism, and culture. It commends the Taiwanese American community for their steadfast support of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, demonstrating extraordinary resilience and commitment to democratic values, inspiring countless people from California and around the world.
The resolution also points out that Taiwan is California's third-largest trading partner, its second-largest export market, and its third-largest import market. The Senate acknowledges the significant and indelible contributions of the Taiwanese community to California's economic growth and development over the years.
Furthermore, the resolution mentions Taiwan's capability and willingness to contribute to the international community and expresses hope for its meaningful participation in international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization, INTERPOL, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The State Senate supports Taiwan's contribution to the international community through appropriate means and urges the California state government to expand cooperation with Taiwan on multiple levels.
Different from the previous two years, this year's resolution specifically mentions that it is the 30th anniversary of Taiwan's presidential direct elections and also the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, making it a dual celebration of democratic milestones worthy of commemoration.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles collaborated last year to invite several California State Senators to visit Taiwan. The delegation members were deeply impressed by the close economic and trade relations between the two regions, as well as Taiwan's social development, natural beauty, and warm hospitality.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco issued a press release stating that the California Senate has passed a pro-Taiwan resolution for three consecutive years. This year, the resolution specifically congratulates Taiwan on the significant milestone of its 30th anniversary of presidential direct elections and affirms the important partnership between Taiwan and California, and between Taiwan and the U.S., in sharing democratic values. This is of positive significance for further strengthening exchanges between the two sides in various fields. (Editor: Tang Shen-yang) 1150623
