(Central News Agency, Kaohsiung, June 23) A university student in Kaohsiung is suspected of animal cruelty to pet mice. A roommate who lived with the student posted a video online exposing the act. The Kaohsiung Animal Protection Office stated today that if the investigation confirms animal cruelty, the case will be transferred to the prosecutor's office for investigation and a fine will be imposed according to the Animal Protection Act.
The Kaohsiung Animal Protection Office stated that it received a video report from netizens claiming that a student at a university dormitory in Kaohsiung allegedly abused and killed pet mice, possibly resulting in the deaths of multiple animals.
According to the Animal Protection Act, no person shall harass, abuse, or harm animals. Violators may face imprisonment for up to 2 years or detention, and a fine of not less than NT$200,000 and not more than NT$2 million.
The Animal Protection Office stated that it has contacted the school to assist in notifying the relevant individual to come forward for questioning. If the investigation confirms animal cruelty, the case will be transferred to the prosecutor's office for investigation, and the school will be asked to strengthen life education on campus to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
The school responded that it received relevant information this morning and is currently investigating. As it is the final exam period, students will be allowed to finish their exams first. The school is currently continuing its investigation and subsequent procedures.
The school pointed out that according to regulations, pets are not allowed in school dormitories. If it is confirmed that the student is a resident, they will be asked to move out according to regulations.
