(CNA, reporter: Chao Li-yen, Taichung, June 23) Taichung Branch of Asia University Hospital stated that a 52-year-old woman surnamed Liao, in pursuit of a slender physique, received weight loss injections. Unexpectedly, she experienced severe hair loss, which frightened her into stopping the medication. Instead, she rapidly regained weight and sought medical attention. Blood tests revealed the underlying issue, and a combination of oral medication and appetite suppressants was prescribed, helping her regain her health.
Asia University Hospital's Taichung Branch issued a press release today. Ye Xin-fu, Director of the Department of Family Medicine, stated that Ms. Liao had been undergoing systematic weight loss treatment in the outpatient clinic. Through regular medication and adjustments to her lifestyle and diet, her weight decreased from 95 kg to 76 kg. However, she interrupted her treatment due to moving. Under the psychological expectation of wanting to be even thinner, she decided to switch to popular weight loss injections, which resulted in a weight loss of 2 to 3 kg within two months.
Shortly after, the patient experienced severe side effects. She felt lethargic all day and fell into severe depressive moods. Her once jet-black hair began to fall out in large clumps. "Every time I showered, the hair clogged the drain like a piece of seaweed," she described, eventually developing a condition similar to "female pattern baldness."
Unable to bear the physical and mental torment, she was terrified and quickly stopped the medication. Unexpectedly, her appetite surged like a wild horse, and her weight rebounded to 82 kg in a short period, forcing her to return for medical help.
Ye Xin-fu pointed out that from the patient's blood test results, it was discovered that her electrolytes and trace elements were severely imbalanced. Coupled with severe hair loss and drastic weight rebound, it was inferred that the medication's side effects were too great. Considering that everyone's tolerance differs, the medical team decided to "reboot" her treatment.
In addition to analyzing her whole-body composition, testing her thyroid, blood sugar, and trace elements, they also prescribed suitable medications tailored to her constitution and condition. This, combined with appetite suppressants, successfully controlled her appetite. Without side effects, her weight returned to a healthy level.
Ye Xin-fu emphasized that obesity does indeed increase the burden on all organs. Obese individuals are at extremely high risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia (the "three highs"), fatty liver disease, cardiovascular diseases, and sleep apnea. It is crucial to be vigilant and seek early health interventions, rather than rashly pursuing a "magic bullet" shortcut to weight loss, ignoring one's own constitution, and ultimately being consumed by side effects.
