KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan (CNA) -- Kaohsiung's Keh-liao Junior High School has received two major vision care awards from the Ministry of Education this year. The school stated that vision care is integrated into local characteristic courses, promoting diverse outdoor activities to encourage students to connect with nature, and has achieved a record of 100% follow-up medical examination rate for six consecutive semesters.

The Department of Senior High and Vocational Education of the Ministry of Education announced the results of the 114th academic year's Health Promotion School selection today. Keh-liao Junior High School won two national grand prizes: the "Excellent Award for Vision Care Outstanding School Selection" and the "Excellent Award for Pre- and Post-Test Effectiveness Evaluation Report of the Health Promotion School Guidance Plan." It is the only junior high school in Kaohsiung to receive an award.

The school stated that vision care has long been integrated into daily campus life and local characteristic courses. In addition to promoting classroom clearing during breaks and diverse outdoor activities, it also combines outdoor courses such as agricultural education, marine and fishing port experiences, and lawn concerts, encouraging students to leave the classroom and get close to nature, learning and growing in the sun.

Keh-liao Junior High School Principal Li Chuan-chuan said that this award is the result of the joint efforts of all teachers, students, parents, and the community. Facing the digital age, the school continues to help students establish correct eye habits through curriculum design and practical life, which is also a responsibility. In the future, it will continue to build a healthy and friendly learning environment.

Nurse Li Pei-shan pointed out that some families, due to busy work schedules or intergenerational care, often delay students' vision follow-up appointments. To ensure zero gaps in health care, whenever a student is found to have not completed their follow-up examination, she proactively contacts parents, and even accompanies students to the clinic for medical treatment, ensuring that every student receives proper follow-up and treatment.

Li Pei-shan stated that through continuous case management and health tracking, the school's myopia rate has decreased year by year, and the rate of vision deterioration is significantly lower than the national average. Maintaining a 100% follow-up rate for six consecutive semesters is the best proof of the school's health promotion achievements.

Student Huang Shun-hsuan serves as the school's vision care ambassador, which has also become a driving force for his classmates. He said that during breaks, he and his classmates go out of the classroom to jump rope, play ball, or take a walk. The school also distributes vision care reading rulers to remind students to maintain a distance of more than 35 centimeters when reading and writing, and to develop good eye habits.

In addition, Keh-liao Junior High School continues to improve the campus hardware environment, including adding curtains, optimizing lighting, and enhancing LED lighting configurations, deepening the vision care culture through both software and hardware advancements. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 0623
