(CNA Washington, June 22, Comprehensive Foreign News) Artificial intelligence (AI) research institution Google DeepMind and independent film company A24 announced today that they have reached a partnership to explore how AI can assist filmmakers and industry professionals.
The collaboration will focus on helping artists develop new creative workflows and techniques, while ensuring that future tools are shaped by the creators who will actually use them, according to the companies.
Under the agreement, A24 and Google DeepMind will collaborate long-term on multiple research and development projects.
According to a report today by The Wall Street Journal, sources familiar with the matter said that Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has also invested $75 million in A24, an independent film company that has released works such as "Backrooms," "Marty Supreme," and the Oscar-winning film "Everything Everywhere All at Once" in recent years.
Google DeepMind declined to comment on the investment amount.
Sources familiar with the matter said that A24 will actively participate in the development of new workflows, while directors and creators will retain full creative control; this collaboration is not an intellectual property or data training agreement.
The partnership will also give A24 access to Google DeepMind's research, infrastructure, and global resources.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a US entertainment industry news outlet, Google DeepMind has previously collaborated with individual filmmakers such as "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky, but this is its first partnership with a complete film studio. Google is one of the few tech giants with a highly acclaimed video generation tool, Veo, and this collaboration is expected to further strengthen Google's position in AI applications for film and television.
The collaboration with A24 will allow Google DeepMind to reach more renowned filmmakers and test and improve related tools through actual creative needs, and may also attract other film companies and creators to evaluate similar partnership models, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
At the same time, the new partnership allows A24 to catch up with some competitors, including Netflix and Amazon Studios, which are developing specialized tools for creators, and Lionsgate, which is working with startup Runway AI to build related models.
This collaboration is expected to accelerate the integration of AI into film and television, intensifying discussions about whether and how directors should use such models in their creative processes. Some renowned directors remain skeptical about the role of generative AI in filmmaking, but an increasing number of top-tier talents seem willing to give it a try.
