Taipei, June 25 (CNA) To strengthen cooperation between Taiwan and European capital markets, the Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corporation (TDCC) and the Taipei Exchange (TPEx) visited the historic Euronext Amsterdam, the world's oldest stock exchange, on June 24. They were invited to ring the bell in the lobby to mark the start of the trading day. This is the first time Taiwanese institutions have been invited to participate in this ceremony, which symbolizes the origin of the securities market.
The delegation was jointly led by TPEx Chairman Chien Li-chung and TDCC Chairman Lin Ping-hui. They were received by Euronext Amsterdam CEO René van Vlerken and his senior management team. Wu Yi-chen, Director of the Economic Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the Netherlands, was present to witness this historic moment.
Euronext is the largest stock exchange group in Europe, with exchanges in financial centers such as Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Italy. The Amsterdam exchange is the birthplace of the world's oldest exchange, with a history dating back to 1602.
The Euronext Amsterdam traditionally opens its trading day at 9 AM with "The Gong Ceremony." In the past, the ceremony was exclusively performed by exchange staff, but now it is performed by invited companies, celebrities, or institutions.
Euronext Amsterdam's official website today published photos of the TDCC and TPEx ringing the bell, welcoming the Taiwanese delegation and emphasizing that the focus of the visit was knowledge sharing and strengthening the cooperative relationship between the two institutions.
Lin Ping-hui told CNA that the world's first stock was issued by the Dutch East India Company. The Taiwan Stock Museum, established by TDCC, also houses a replica, which is one of the museum's most popular exhibits. He expressed his honor at being able to participate in the meaningful opening ceremony of the Amsterdam exchange.
Lin Ping-hui stated that TDCC, as the back office of Taiwan's securities market, has established business relationships with several European institutions to facilitate European market investments for Taiwanese institutional investors. They will continue to strengthen international connections and create a more convenient investment environment.
In addition to the bell-ringing ceremony, both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on opportunities for cooperation between the Taiwanese and Dutch markets. They agreed to expand cooperation in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and enhancing issuer services in the future.
On June 23, Lin Ping-hui and Chien Li-chung also led a delegation to visit Representative to the Netherlands, Tanaka Mitsugu. They held in-depth discussions on the strategic value of Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain, how to attract hundreds of billions of euros from Dutch pension funds to invest in Taiwan's capital market, and quantum cryptography.
Tanaka Mitsugu warmly welcomed the delegation and highly commended their financial expertise and efforts in promoting financial diplomacy. The representative office will provide full support to Taiwan's financial industry in expanding its economic and trade presence in Europe. (Edited by: Wei Shu) 1150625
