(Central News Agency, Taipei, June 24) DPP Taipei mayoral candidate Shen Po-yang yesterday proposed a policy of free temporary childcare for children aged 0 to 6 every week. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an stated today that the current service capacity is approximately 130,000 hours per week, and the city will continue to pragmatically establish service points and increase capacity.
Yesterday, Shen Po-yang proposed several childcare policies, including expanding respite care services, providing 4 hours of free temporary childcare per week for preschool children, increasing the number of free psychological counseling sessions for parents, and offering free in-home childcare guidance from the Taipei City Government.
Regarding the feasibility of providing 4 hours of free temporary childcare per week, Chiang Wan-an responded to media inquiries today before attending the Taipei City Government's "Police and Integrity United, Glorious Inheritance" cross-domain summit. He stated that after an assessment by the Social Welfare Department, Taipei City's current service capacity is about 130,000 hours per week. The city government will continue to pragmatically establish service points and increase capacity to alleviate the burden on more childcare families.
Chiang Wan-an said that since taking office, he has launched several childcare policies, including the nation's first childcare work-hour reduction without salary reduction plan, priority housing for childcare families, the nation's leading "Good Pregnancy" taxi service, weekly fresh milk reports, and free school lunches for elementary and junior high school students. Additionally, a dedicated women's and children's hospital is about to open, all of which have been felt by the citizens.
Yesterday, Taipei City Social Welfare Department Director Yao Shu-wen explained that Taipei City currently has a temporary childcare service capacity of approximately 130,000 hours per week. Shen Po-yang's proposal would require a capacity of 414,000 hours per week, leaving a deficit of nearly 300,000 hours. This could lead to insufficient service supply and difficulties in personnel deployment, not only failing to relieve pressure on childcare families but also causing the temporary childcare system to become congested.
