PENGHU (CNA) — Two men, identified by the surnames Hong and Lin, were taken into custody by the Penghu District Prosecutors Office following separate incidents of operating vehicles while under the influence of drugs this June.

Hong was apprehended on June 12 after testing positive for ketamine while riding a motorcycle. Despite previous convictions for drunk driving, the local court initially released him to his mother's custody. Prosecutors appealed the decision, leading the Taiwan High Court Kaohsiung Branch Court to revoke the ruling. On June 24, the Penghu District Court granted the prosecution's request to detain Hong.

Separately, Lin was caught on June 22 operating a vehicle after consuming amphetamines. Following his arrest and the seizure of drug paraphernalia, the Penghu District Prosecutors Office requested his detention, citing the high risk of recidivism. The court approved the request on June 23.

The Penghu District Prosecutors Office stated that drug-impaired driving poses a severe threat to public safety. The office reaffirmed its commitment to strict enforcement, proactive detention, and seeking heavy penalties to ensure traffic safety and a drug-free environment.
