US-Iran War Key News
(CNA Tehran, June 25, comprehensive foreign news) Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps warned today that relevant vessels must not transit the Strait of Hormuz without authorization, stating that vessels that do not comply "will be dealt with."
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy transport route. It was blocked by Iranian authorities during the Middle East war, and peace talks between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked over future arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz.
According to AFP, Iran plans to levy a so-called "maritime service fee" instead of a transit fee; the United States, on the other hand, maintains that the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway and should not be tolled.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated: "The only authorized route for transiting the Strait of Hormuz is the route announced by the Islamic Republic of Iran."
The Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that any unauthorized transit by vessels is "unacceptable and extremely dangerous."
They also condemned the new Strait of Hormuz routes announced by "certain authorities," without further elaboration.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and the Persian Gulf Arab states, is a narrow waterway through which approximately 20% of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas passes. The narrowest point of the strait is only about 30 kilometers wide.
Currently, the only authorized route by Iran is a passage along its coast.
Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding last week, stipulating that merchant ships can transit the Strait of Hormuz free of charge for the next 60 days. This memorandum of understanding aims to end the Middle East war.
As negotiations between the US and Iran continue, it is still unclear what arrangements will be made after this period.
Iran and Oman, which border the Strait of Hormuz, announced on the 23rd that they will study the "cost-based fees" to be charged for services related to managing the strait.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is visiting neighboring countries in the Persian Gulf this week, emphasized that Washington will not accept any transit fees or other charges. (Compiled by Liu Shu-chin) 1150625
