(CNA Taipei, June 25) Regarding the landslide lake in the Mata'an Stream in Hualien County, which caused disaster last year, Premier Cho Jung-tai stated today that the Mata'an Stream landslide lake is currently in a shallow shoal state with a storage capacity of less than 5,000 metric tons, having reverted to a riverine form. However, a large amount of soil accumulation upstream poses a disaster risk of a new landslide lake forming. He has requested the Ministry of Agriculture to continuously monitor the latest information on monitoring and alerts.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported on the status of landslide lake monitoring and management at the Executive Yuan meeting today, explaining the current situation of new landslide lakes in the Wanli Stream, the Mata'an Stream, and the Jiazouliao Stream in Zhushan, Nantou.

At the post-meeting press conference hosted by Executive Yuan spokesperson Li Hui-chih today, it was relayed that Cho Jung-tai pointed out in the meeting that the Mata'an Stream landslide lake is currently in a shallow shoal state with a storage capacity of less than 5,000 metric tons, having reverted to a riverine form. However, an estimated 240 million cubic meters of soil accumulation upstream, along with unstable sediment outflow, poses a disaster risk of a new landslide lake forming. He asked the Ministry of Agriculture to continue monitoring changes in the landslide lake and river channel, to stay abreast of the latest monitoring and alert information, and to continue promoting national forest management measures.

Regarding the Jiazouliao Stream landslide lake in Zhushan, Nantou, Cho Jung-tai said that the current storage capacity of the Jiazouliao Stream landslide lake in Zhushan, Nantou, is 66,000 metric tons. It has also transitioned from overflowing to seeping, and there are no residents downstream requiring protection, thus no direct impact. (Editor: Lin Shu-yuan) 1150625
