Chou Tien-chen Defeats Compatriot in Straight Sets to Reach US Open Badminton Round of 16

Taipei, June 25 (CNA) World No. 6 Chou Tien-chen, the top Taiwanese player, defeated compatriot Huang Yu-kai 21-19, 21-18 in the first round of the BWF Super 300 US Open Badminton Championships on Wednesday, successfully advancing to the round of 16.

Chou, the top seed in the tournament, faced Huang Yu-kai, ranked world No. 60, for the first time in a Badminton World Federation (BWF) event.

The senior player, Chou Tien-chen, completely controlled the rhythm from the start of the first game, executing powerful smashes from the backcourt and delicate net shots with excellent precision, at one point establishing a significant 14-5 lead.

However, Chou began to make unforced errors, allowing Huang Yu-kai to score eight consecutive points and even tie the game at 18-18 towards the end. Fortunately, Chou drew upon his extensive experience, winning two consecutive points to reach game point and ultimately securing the first game.

In the second game, Chou was still adjusting his physical condition, which allowed Huang Yu-kai to briefly take a 6-2 lead. However, Chou responded with an astonishing 13-1 run to overtake the score and reached three match points at 20-17, before winning in straight sets, giving his younger compatriot a valuable lesson.

Chou Tien-chen is competing in the United States for the second consecutive year. He reached the semifinals last year, and after winning his first-round match this year, he will face 18-year-old Indian prodigy Rounak Chouhan in the round of 16.

In addition to Chou Tien-chen in the men's singles, Su Li-yang also defeated Brazilian player Jonathan Matias 21-16, 21-17 and will face South Korea's Yu Taebin in the round of 16.
