(CNA Caracas, Aug. 24, International News) Venezuela was hit by a series of strong earthquakes and more than 20 aftershocks today, causing multiple buildings to collapse in areas including the capital Caracas. Venezuelan interim president Rodriguez subsequently declared a state of emergency.

According to Reuters, Rodriguez appeared on national television accompanied by National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodriguez and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello. Jorge is Rodriguez's older brother.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred about 160 kilometers west of Caracas, followed by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake less than a minute later.

Rodriguez expressed condolences to the families of the victims but did not release casualty figures.

Rodriguez also stated that Simon Bolivar Airport in Maiquetia, near Caracas, was closed due to damage. (Compiled by Lu Ying-tzu) 1150625
