(CNA Caracas, April 25, comprehensive foreign news) The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that two earthquakes occurred in Venezuela tonight, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, causing multiple buildings to collapse in the capital, Caracas. Neighboring Colombia also felt the tremors.
According to AFP, the USGS stated that these were twin earthquakes, with the foreshock measuring 7.2 and the mainshock measuring 7.5 occurring 39 seconds later.
USGS data shows that the two earthquakes occurred approximately 45 kilometers apart, with different focal depths, and less than a minute apart. Residents in Colombia also reported feeling the shaking.
Reuters reported that scientists estimate that Venezuela may suffer "significant casualties and widespread damage."
The USGS stated that heavy casualties and widespread damage are highly likely, with an initial estimate of deaths ranging from 10,000 to 100,000.
Authorities have not yet released exact casualty figures. Venezuela's Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello stated on national television, "(Some) buildings have collapsed (in Caracas), and many homes have crumbled."
