(Central News Agency, Washington, June 24, Comprehensive Foreign News) The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a strong earthquake occurred near the northern coast of Venezuela, with an initial magnitude of 7.1, causing buildings to collapse in the capital, Caracas.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning Centers stated that dangerous tsunami waves could occur in coastal areas within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, including the coasts of Bonaire, Venezuela, Curacao, and Aruba. The U.S. Tsunami Warning Centers indicated that Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are also threatened by a tsunami.

The earthquake occurred approximately 28 kilometers northwest of Montalbán. Some of Venezuela's largest oil refineries are located in the surrounding area.

The earthquake was also felt in the capital, Caracas, where residents were seen in panic fleeing buildings with friends, family, and pets, and then gathering in the streets.

Videos verified by CNN's geolocation show damaged buildings and falling facades in some Caracas neighborhoods, with dust filling the air.

The USGS stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was west of the Caribbean coastal community of Moron, about 168 kilometers west of Caracas. The earthquake's focal depth was 13 kilometers.

In Caracas, people evacuated from shaking buildings and remained outdoors. Many were visibly shaken, witnessing entire walls collapse and furniture visible from the street. Dust was also seen rising in two Caracas neighborhoods, where restaurants and other businesses are usually bustling.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello stated that the earthquake was felt in multiple states and pointed out "worrying damage" in the Altamira neighborhood of Caracas, with houses and buildings collapsing. He urged the public to stay outdoors due to the possibility of further damage to some structures from aftershocks. (Translator: Chang Hsiao-wen) 1150625
